Mr. Turner’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

In chapter 1 on Shipshape, Nate asks Ben if his dad has any of his “delicious chocolate chip cookies.” Mr. Turner, Ben’s dad, runs a bakery in the town where they live, Riverside. Ben has other things on his mind, but we learn that Mr. Turner was working on a new batch. And here it is! This recipe is one of the family favorites, and now you can make it too. While the base recipe is from a very famous chocolate chip cookie recipe, you’ll find some new twists. Just like Shipshape, there’s something new awaiting you around every corner.

Enjoy!

Recipe (makes about 4 1/2 dozen cookies)

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp. maple extract

  • 2 large eggs

  • 10 oz (1 small bag) of dark chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cranberries

Here’s what you do:

  • Toast the nuts (both kinds) in a dry pan on medium heat for a couple of minutes or until you begin to smell the walnuts and pecans. Set aside.

  • In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.

  • In a large bowl, combine butter (softened or melted), both sugars, and the maple extract. Beat it until creamy.

  • Add the eggs one at a time. Make sure they are mixed in well.

  • Add the flour mixture from the small bowl to the large bowl a little bit at a time until it is well mixed.

  • Fold in the toasted nuts, cranberries, and chocolate chips.

  • Set in the fridge overnight. Or you can bake them right away.

Baking:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Place small scoops of dough on an ungreased baking sheets

  • Bake for about 9-12 minutes depending on your oven. It took 12 minutes for me.

This recipe is based on the Toll House Cookie Recipe with some additions and changes. I hope you enjoy it!
